Can I notarize before my new Notary stamp arrives?

I’m awaiting my Notary stamp. In the meantime, can I notarize without it?V. B., Delaware

No, you may not perform notarial acts without your official stamp. The state of Delaware requires the use of a Notary seal for notarizations:

“If a notarial act regarding a tangible record is performed by a notary public, an official stamp must be affixed to or embossed on the certificate” (29 DC 4328[b]).

For more information, please see our article on the 5 steps to correctly complete a notarization.

Hotline answers are based on the laws in the state where the question originated and may not reflect the laws of other states. If in doubt, always refer to your own state statutes. – The Editors

I appreciate this email that was sent to me. It was very knowledgeable for me. I recommend that we receive more training for other notaries. I was very excited once I got the email regarding how and what to look for when notarizing for others.

What about in NYS? Can you just hand write in your credentials until your stamp arrives?

Hello. According to New York's Notary Public License Law, “The laws of the State of New York do not require the use of seals by notaries public. If a seal is used, it should sufficiently identify the notary public, his authority and jurisdiction. It is the opinion of the Department of State that the only inscription required is the name of the notary and the words ‘Notary Public for the State of New York’” (NPLL).
