I am confused about how much I should charge for my services. How would I charge if I am doing basic notarizing for one document? — A.B., Illinois

The maximum fee that may be charged by an Illinois Notary for a traditional notarial act is $5 (5 ILCS 312/3-104[a]).

The maximum fee for performing an electronic notarial act (remote notarization on electronic records or in-person electronic notarization) is $25 (5 ILCS 312/3-104[b]).

Notaries in other jurisdictions can look up the maximum fee schedules for notarial acts in their states on our 2024 Notary Fees By State page.

Notaries who need information about charging travel fees can find information in our article, “A guide to Notary travel fees across the United States.”

Hotline answers are based on the laws in the state where the question originated and may not reflect the laws of other states. If in doubt, always refer to your own state statutes. – The Editors

Hello - I am in MIchigan. Is the $10 charge per signed document, or per transaction? I've notarized for a person who has 3 different documents, or sometimes the same document in triplicate. In this example, would I charge $30, or $10 because all 3 documents are in the same transaction?

Hello. In Michigan, “The fee charged by a notary public for performing a notarial act shall not be more than $10.00 for any individual transaction or notarial act” (MCL 55.285[7]).
