May I order a second Notary stamp as a backup?

Photo of woman with long dark hair on phone. She is looking at papers in her hand. Text on image reads NNA Hotline Tip.

I heard it's a good idea to have more than one stamp in case the ink on your original stamp runs out. Can I order another stamp in the middle of my commission? If so, do I have to go through the agency I got my first stamp from, or can I go anywhere?J.J., Florida

Many Notaries find it valuable to have an extra stamp on hand if the ink in the stamp runs out or the stamp breaks. Florida Notaries may have more than one stamp, and you are not required to go to the same place you purchased your original stamp.

For information on seal purchase rules in other states, please see our U.S. Notary Reference page.

Hotline answers are based on the laws in the state where the question originated and may not reflect the laws of other states. If in doubt, always refer to your own state statutes. – The Editors

My notary stamp (purchased from NNA) is very light. Am I able to order a new stamp through NNA without a new Certificate of Authorization from SOS as my original stamp was purchased from NNA?

Hello. It depends on the rules of the state you live in, and the states you wish to apply for a commission in. For more information, please see this article: https://www.nationalnotary.org/notary-bulletin/blog/2014/10/faq-where-can-notaries-use-their-commissions#more-commission

Personally, I think having more than one stamp can potentially lead to fraud. I only have one stamp and it is sufficient.

I'm in PA. When I first got my notary stamp and journal, I was sent two stamps. A large one and a small one. This was paid for and ordered by my company, so I'm not sure if that was standard or if the company paid extra for the spare.
