Is a notarized document from Puerto Rico recordable?

Is a deed notarized by a Notary in Puerto Rico recordable in California, or does the seller need to go to an embassy? — T.B., California

Since Puerto Rico is a commonwealth of the United States, the seller should not need to visit an embassy or obtain an authentication for the document to be recognized or recorded in California. You can confirm this and receive any additional instructions by contacting the county clerk/recorder’s office in the county where the deed will be recorded.

Hotline answers are based on the laws in the state where the question originated and may not reflect the laws of other states. If in doubt, always refer to your own state statutes. – The Editors
