Do I always need a witness when notarizing loan documents?

I am notarizing documents for a property sale, and the property is in Tennessee. Does Tennessee require a witness when notarizing real estate documents? The signing company has not requested one, and I have not seen the documents yet.A.L., Louisiana

Tennessee does not typically require witnesses for a deed or mortgage; however, if the deed or mortgage has signature lines for witnesses, you should confirm with the closing agent for the transaction or your contracting company and follow their instructions.

Hotline answers are based on the laws in the state where the question originated and may not reflect the laws of other states. If in doubt, always refer to your own state statutes. – The Editors
