What to know when applying to become a New Jersey Notary Public

  • Meet New Jersey Notary requirements. You must be 18 or older, be a resident or employed by a company with a primary place of business in New Jersey, and have no convictions for crimes involving dishonesty or crimes of the first or second degree.
  • Complete your training with the state. Before filling out your application, follow the state’s training and exam requirements. You’ll need to read the New Jersey Notary Public Manual, complete the training videos, and pass an exam. Once you’ve completed the exam, you’ll receive an exam access key to include on your application.
  • It may take up to 6 weeks to get commissioned. Your commission application is approved by the New Jersey State Treasurer, not the NNA. The process can take anywhere from 4 to 6 weeks.
