What to know when applying to become a New York Notary Public

  • Make sure you’re eligible. You must be 18 or older, of good moral character, live in or have a business in New York, have the equivalent of common school education, and have no disqualifying criminal convictions.
  • No training is required, but you’ll want to study. There’s no state-required training, but you’ll need to read and understand the Notary Public License Law. To prepare for the state exam you can also add our online prep course to your Notary package.
  • Pass the state exam. After completing the exam, you’ll receive a pass slip to submit with your online application.
  • Applications are processed within a few days. According to the Division of Licensing Services, it takes 3-5 days for New York Notary applications to be processed.
  • Your commission lasts four years. If approved, your commission will be issued by the New York Department of State’s Division of Licensing Services, not the National Notary Association.
