What to know when applying to become a Notary in Missouri

  • Check your eligibility. You must be 18 or older, a permanent resident alien of the U.S., a resident of the county where you’re applying, able to read and write English, and have no felony convictions.
  • Training and an exam are required. Before applying, you’ll need to read the Missouri Notary Public Handbook and complete the state's required training course and exam—available online or in written format.
  • Apply online or by mail. You can submit your Notary application through the Secretary of State’s website or by mail.
  • File your bond and take your oath. After receiving your commission letter and certificate, you have 60 days to file your bond and take your oath of office at the county clerk’s office.
  • Processing can take up to six weeks. The state typically processes applications within 4 to 6 weeks.
