What to know before you become a Notary Public in Michigan

  • Make sure you’re eligible. You must be 18 or older, a U.S. citizen or legal resident, a resident of or maintain a business in Michigan, and a resident of the county in which you are requesting appointment. See the full list of Michigan Notary requirements.
  • No training or exam required. Michigan does not require new Notaries to complete training or pass an exam.
  • It can take up to six weeks to get commissioned. can take up to two weeks if you applied online or up to six weeks if you applied by mail.
  • Your commission term lasts six years. You are commissioned by the Michigan Department of State, not the National Notary Association.
