What to know when applying to become a Notary in Maryland.

  • Make sure you’re eligible. Maryland Notary requirements state that you must be at least 18 years old, live or work in Maryland, and be of good moral character and integrity.
  • Have references handy. You’ll need to provide the contact information of 3 references (not family members or employers) in your MD Notary application.
  • Complete your training and exam before you apply. The online Notary application will require you to upload a proof of completion certificate and a certification of passing.
  • Maryland has a 4-year Notary commission term. You’re appointed by the MD Secretary of State, not by the National Notary Association. They recommend allowing 4 to 6 weeks to process your commission application.
