Hotline Tip: Journal Entries For Multiple Documents

NNA Hotline Tips For NotariesI have been asked to notarize three different types of documents, all for the same signer. Do I need to create three separate journal entries, or can I simply list all three document types in the appropriate journal column? – N.C., Seattle, WA

Although a journal is not a requirement in Washington, it is recommended that you create a separate journal entry for each document because the type of notarization and other entries for the journal may not be the same for all the documents. The same recommendation applies to Notaries in states with existing journal requirements, and in the case of California and Hawaii, is required.

Hotline answers are based on the laws in the state where the question originated and may not reflect the laws of other states. If in doubt, always refer to your own state statutes. –The Editors
