Hotline Tip: How Many Journal Signatures Are Required For Multiple Documents?

NNA Hotline Tips For NotariesIf a signer is having multiple documents notarized, can I simply draw a line in the journal and have him sign once for all of the documents? - B.R., Lompoc, CA

No. Government Code Section 8206(2)(a) requires certain entries for each notarized document, one of which is the signature of each signer. Therefore, you cannot draw a single signature line; you must have the signer sign each line separately.

Hotline answers are based on the laws in the state where the question originated and may not reflect the laws of other states. If in doubt, always refer to your own state statutes. – The Editors
