May I charge a separate travel fee aside from the fee for notarizing documents?— K.S., Florissant, MO
A Missouri Notary traveling to perform a notarial act may charge a travel fee of not more than the approved federal mileage rate (currently .50 cents per mile) and an expedited convenience fee of no more than $25.00. Such fees may be charged only if Notary and signer agree BEFOREHAND on the amount to be charges. The Notary must explain that a travel fee is separate from the notarial fees (RSMo 486.350). Technically, the law says the Notary and signer must agree on the fee prior to the Notary affixing his or her seal on the document. However, the NNA recommends that the Notary obtain agreement with the signer on the travel fee on the phone before making the trip.
